It’s not hard to overboard on Easter. Seems like nowadays it’s turning into second Christmas. When it comes to our family, we want the kid’s focus to be more on why we celebrate Easter vs. what we get, so we try to keep it pretty low key. I’d love to share with you five simple and purposeful things we typically include in their baskets.
Books
On any occasion that calls for a gift, there’s always a book involved. Our family loves to read and there’s no shortage of great titles out there to choose from. Paperback books are pretty cost effective, running anywhere from $5-$7. We really love books from Usborne, so if a friend is having a party, I generally try to stock up and stash them away for future use. If you don’t have a book lady, let me know! I can connect you with a few.
Flip Flops
When spring hits that means flip flop weather is coming! It’s a pretty strong guarantee that by the end of the last summer season the kids have either grown out of, or destroyed, their flip flops. I recently purchased each kid a pair of flips flops from Old Navy for around $3 each. They’re super affordable and sets them up for a fun start to the warm weather season.
Games
We love games! Hopefully you read my recent post about our favorite family card games. If not, go check it out for some great game ideas. You can get most of these card games for under $10. Plus, you can make it a whole family gift. This year we got the kids Chickapig, which I’m super excited to play! I get excited about anything with chickens in it, but this one looks like it’s going to be fun.
Movies
This would be another good whole family gift. We’re huge Disney fans, and I’m a huge Mary Poppins fan, so we had to get Mary Poppins Returns to add to our collection. The nice thing about buying DVDs these days is that you get a regular DVD, a Blu-Ray disk, as well as a digital file for around $20. Perfect for a fun family movie night!
Outdoor Activities
My last suggestion would be to include anything that gets your kids outside! After being stuck in the house all winter, I like to encourage the kids to be outside when the weather is nice. We will usually throw in a pack of sidewalk chalk, a container of bubbles, or a new jump rope. You can usually get these items for just a few dollars each (or less). Then when the kids complain that they’re bored on a nice day, you have some way to encourage them to go outside.

Of course the best gift of all at Easter is the gift of life that our savior Jesus gives us. Even if you’re not a believer, I hope you can experience the gift of spending quality time with those you love during this holiday.
