In the photography industry you hear this question a lot, “What is your why?” In other words, why are you a photographer? Why did you choose to make this your job rather than just a hobby?
And, the honest-truthful answer? Check out the picture above. Those five beautiful (and handsome) faces there beside me are my why. I AM a mom with a camera. I AM the legacy keeper of my family. I AM my family documentarian. This life is such a precious and wonderful gift and I NEED to make sure that my kids see that as they grow. I also need to see that too, when I’m in the trenches of parenting and I feel like all hope is lost. I need my family to know that I see them, and that I love them, just as they are. That they are wonderful in all their strange, quirky, beautiful, and unique ways.
And I desperately want that for you too! That’s why I choose photography as my job. We can’t all be good at everything, right? How boring would life be! We all do our best to keep our family memories and legacies alive, but some of us feel, or know, that photography is not our gift.
