Mom, Don’t Be A Ghost In Your Own Family

Hey mom. I see you. You work tirelessly to make your family feel loved and important. You might be juggling work and family life. Planning meals, keeping up with schedules, driving kids too and from practices. It’s a never ending job. One that is tiring and, unfortunately, thankless most days.

On top of all your real life responsibilities, I’m going to guess you’re also your family’s historian. Taking pictures and trying to keep up with printing them and making albums. But how many of those pictures are YOU actually in? Do you make taking pictures with your family a priority, or are you a ghost in your own family?

Here’s some tips to make bring you back to being part of the family photos once again!

Use A Timer

I’m going to guess most of you use your phone to take pictures. That’s great! They’re a super convenient way to capture day to day life. Keep using them!!! Did you know that most camera phones have a self timer option? If you’re not sure how to use yours, I encourage you to do a little research. Google is Google for a reason! Find out how to use it and figure out the best way to get yourself in the frame with your family.

You can simply prop your phone up somewhere and jump in the shot. I’ll usually set it on a piece of furniture and use some books or pillows to prop the phone up. Or Amazon has these amazing little bendable tripods that are really inexpensive. I love this one because it even comes with a Bluetooth remote to make it even easier to get in the shot.

A Piece of You

Maybe you’re not quite technically savvy and figuring out the whole timer thing isn’t an option. I get it! Technology isn’t my strong suit either. In that case, try to get a piece of yourself in the photo. What does that mean? Maybe it’s your shadow or reflection. Maybe it’s a part of your body that appears in the image or something that belongs to you. A way for the family to know you were there, even if your face isn’t in the frame. It’s a great way to think outside the box and look for creative ways to compose your picture.

Hire A Pro

Let’s be honest. We don’t all have the bandwidth at this time in life to make these things possible. I get that! It can be especially hard when your kids are little. That’s why hiring a professional photographer is a great way to ensure that you are included in your family pictures. Be sure to do some research and find someone that you know will be a good fit for your family. There are so many photographers out there, there is surely someone that will fit your family dynamic, style, and budget. Pick a pro and make schedule a session! Just do it! I promise you won’t regret it.

Oh! And speaking of hiring a pro, consider hiring me to come document what motherhood means to you! I’ll be booking Motherhood Docu Sessions during the month of May. Is May a busy time for you? No problem! You or your significant other can purchase a gift card for of my Motherhood Docu Sessions and schedule it any time over the summer months. I’d love to come share some time with you and make you the star you deserve to be mama!
